KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Star 102.1's popular morning show host, Kim Hansard, went back to work Monday after having a double mastectomy.

Lori Tucker sat down with her longtime friend to talk about battling breast cancer; from her diagnosis, to the impact on her family, to the ups and downs of going public with her story.

"Once I made that announcement on our radio program, it wasn't just my closest friends and family who knew. It was out there. And because people are so loving and so caring and lifting us up in prayer, I go to the grocery store, 'Kim, I just want you to know I'm praying for you.' And while that's wonderful, it's right there. I couldn't get away from it. Not that I could get away from it anyway, but that's the pros and cons of it. Much more pros."

A battle like this can put a marriage to the test. Kim says it has made her and husband, Ralph, the strongest they've ever been.

"My husband has been my rock and he asked me from the very beginning as he stood there the day I got my diagnosis, 'What do you need? I'm here for you,' and I said that's what I need," Hansard said.

How to tell their son Eli was a dilemma that ended up working itself out. The 8-year-old found out from a friend at school who told Eli he was praying for him.

"It was a well-meaning friend. He came up to him and said 'Eli I'm praying for you and I'm sorry your mom has breast cancer.' So that's how he heard. We were going to tell him, after my surgery when he saw that I was up and looking good," Hansard said.

Dozens of women have let Kim know they have scheduled mammograms after hearing her story. Kim finds out if she will need chemotherapy on Thursday.
