KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A toddler was sent to the hospital after a dog bit her face Tuesday night.

The Knoxville Police Department says it happened around 9:55 p.m. at the Steeplechase Apartments located on the 5800 block of Central Avenue Pike.

The dog's owner, Jetta Surrett, 21, baby sits the 2-year-old girl, but usually keeps the dog in the bedroom when the child is at her home.

Police say when the toddler's mother, Kendra Lusby, 22, arrived, she insisted that her daughter should play with the dog.

Surrett told Lusby the dog was not friendly towards children. However, Lusby opened the bedroom door and allowed her daughter near the animal while she sat on the floor next to them.

The dog then bit the girl on the cheek, leaving a huge wound on her face.

The child was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and is expected to be okay.

A referral has been made to the Department of Children's Services. Charges are possible against Lusby pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The dog was surrendered to KPD Animal Control, which officials say the owner no longer wants it and has surrendered ownership. The dog was not up to date on its required shots.

Surrett may be cited as the investigation continues.
