KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Millions of people will take to the roads and skies over the holidays, and those travelers will be a key target for scammers.

Whether you're going on a vacation or heading home to see family there will be those around every corner waiting to take advantage.

Scam Number 5: Travel Scams

Everyone looks forward to the holidays for a brief escape in the middle of winter, but beware of scammers that prey on that desperation to get away.

You especially want to be careful if you're booking vacation destinations.

"If you do book through an agency, make sure it is a reputable agency, preferably local, so that you can go talk to someone face to face," said Stephanie Milani of AAA of East Tennessee.

If not, some of those agents may take your money and run. It won't be until you arrive at your destination that you realize it's a scam.

"You may show up and there's no cruise ship, or you may not be able to get a hold of someone because the reservation is not in your name," said Milani.

Beware of out-of-state travel agencies that use 800 numbers. If they don't give immediate written confirmation, that's another red flag. Never pay by check or cash.

"When you're making these big purchases, you want to try to put it on a credit card, because that does offer you some additional security as far as the payment goes," said Milani.

Another tip: always read the fine print and purchase travel insurance.

Our 12 Scams of Christmas continues Thursday, Nov. 21 with a scam that again aims to tug the heartstrings. It's a warning before you take pity on anyone looking to get home for the holidays.
