KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The video for a new ad that encourages girls to be engineers is going viral and female students at UTs School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are happy about it.
The Goldieblox commercial uses the Beastie Boys song "Girls" to send the message that girls can participate in the typically male-dominated field. Goldieblox sells games and books that encourage girls to use their brains.
Female engineering students at UT say the message that women are capable to do any job is an empowering one.
Choosing a career in computer science was an easy choice for Zahra Mahoor, who helps program robots to perform tasks. She says she simply likes seeing her ideas come to life.
Ph.D. student Denise Koesler says 6.1 percent of undergraduate students and 21 percent graduate students in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department are female.
That's why Koesler, Mahoor and others created a mentoring program they call "Systers," to encourage women to enter technical fields of study.
"The number one way to recruit other women is to show them what it means to be in this field. When there's so few women to start with it's hard to have that many women to bring them into the field," added Koesler.
Part of the group's mission is to be role models.
"We have plans to go to near by schools and talk to little girls about coming into engineering maybe having little engineering contests," said Nicole Pennington who is getting her Ph.D. in computer engineering.
After seeing the Goldieblox commercial, these women in technology have a word of advice for little girls who may be watching.
"Just go do what you think is fun and your future will figure it out on its way," said Koesler.
Systers was formed back in April and has more than 30 members.
