KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Knoxville police need your help to find the driver who hit a UT student in a crosswalk near campus and fled.

Witnesses say the driver sped up when the victim was walking across the street. The accident happened near the intersection of Laurel Avenue and 16th Street on Friday night, just after 9p.m.

"The car, I see it out of the corner of my eye going real fast and next thing I know it hit me," explained the victim, Kevin Higgins.

The UT sophomore had just stepped off the bus with his friends and was crossing 16th Street when the car driving North on 16th hit him.

"I was about half way across the intersections I checked to see if any cars were coming, I didn't see any and about half way across I heard somebody call my name, I saw the head lights and I heard it speeding up and then it just hit me," Higgins explained.

He says it all happened in a matter of seconds.

"From what I'm told I did kind of a back flip roll over the car and hit the pavement with my head," he said.

He was taken to UT medical for his injuries.

"My face is obviously scratched up and I got some stitches in my head, otherwise I'm doing alright," Higgins said, describing his injuries.

He needed multiple stitches to his head, but was otherwise uninjured. Higgins knows his condition could have been much worse.

"Especially with Thanksgiving coming up, I definitely have something to be thankful for, it could have been so much worse," he admits.

The night of the accident, police interviewed witnesses who say they saw the car accelerate, which Higgins also reported.

"I heard the car accelerating.  I think it was an accident, I think when they were accelerating they were trying to beat me but I think the better course of action would have been to hit their breaks," he said.

Now, he says he wants the driver to know he's ok.

"To whoever was the driver I'm praying for that person, I just hope they come forward, I hope they know I'm not dead," he said.

Higgins and witnesses say the car was a silver, four-door, small sedan; possibly a Honda or a car similar to a Honda.
