Fort Campbell 101st soldiers return from Afghanistan deployment

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - The first snow of the season brought a touch of white to Fort Campbell as 512 soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) returned to the military post after a six-month deployment in Afghanistan.

The soldiers were among the last of the Currahees to return to the sprawling military post on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. The Kentucky New Era and The Leaf-Chronicle reported that family members waited in the cold to greet the soldiers on Monday, just days before Thanksgiving.

The inactivation of the unit, which became famous as the "Band of Brothers" in a book by historian Stephen Ambrose and an HBO miniseries produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, is set to take place in the spring. No date has been set.
