KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Power outages are possible as a winter storm marches across East Tennessee.

Earlier Tuesday evening, the Knoxville Utilities Board outage map showed there were roughly 166 customers without power across the Knoxville area. That number dropped as the night went on and the weather stayed at a steady drizzle.

Weather is expected to worsen overnight Tuesday into Wednesday and KUB wants customers to be prepared for an outage.

Last January's snow storm knocked power out for as many as 28,000 customers and, while Tuesday's storm is not expected to generate nearly as much snow, KUB crews say they are ready.

"Well have additional crews on standby as conditions warrant," explained Randy O'Neal, a KUB spokesperson.

Knoxville received more than two inches of rain Tuesday, which can lead to power outages later on.

"We've had quite a bit of rain over the last several days which will saturate the grown and any time you get saturated ground and high winds that combination can topple tree," O'Neal said.

Neighborhoods from west to north Knoxville were impacted by the outages, and KUB says they will pay attention to those areas.

"We look at conditions where we've had past problems with trees and what not, falling on lines, we will target those areas with crews," he said. "We recommend having an emergency preparedness kit filled with batteries, flashlights, battery-operated radios, your cell phone, those types of things to ensure you can get through any outage," he said.

In addition to your emergency preparedness kit, be sure to have extra blankets on hand because most heating systems rely on electricity.

KUB says in the case of an outage, be sure to call them right away so they came tackle the problem as quickly as possible.
