Shoppers line up for early Thanksgiving deals

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A line of shoppers braved the cold temperatures Thanksgiving morning to get a chance at the first door buster deals of the weekend.

Black Friday has been creeping more and more into Thanksgiving holiday each year with many stores opening the night before. Kmart took it to the next level this year by opening at 6:00 a.m.

The first shoppers began lining up at 6:00 Wednesday night at the Kmart on North Broadway.

"I was surprised," said shopper Joseph Woods. "I actually didn't know if anybody would be out here."

By the time the doors opened more than fifty people were in line each armed with their own reasons for braving the cold line.

"I'm looking for a tablet," said shopper Anne Emerit.

"I'm actually getting a gift for a friend's kid, because they couldn't stay up this late and I'm always up this late," added Woods.

"Whether we like it or not the reality is shopping on Thanksgiving has become a tradition for many folks," said Store Manager Greg Headrick.

When the store first announced its intentions to open at 6 a.m. many were outraged, but this is not their first time opening up on the holiday.

"This is our 22nd year of being open on Thanksgiving," said Headrick. A lot of folks don't realize that and Thanksgiving is pretty much equaling what we do on Black Friday."

Shopper didn't seem to mind the store's decision.

"It doesn't bother me, because I think it cuts down on the madness," said Woods.

"I have to work so it doesn't bother me very much," said shopper Rebecca Gray.

Ultimately for those who waited in line the deals inside were just too good to pass up and many managed to check off their wish list and cash out in plenty of time to make it to their thanksgiving dinners.

"I'm looking to get one gift and get out of here before it gets crazy," said Woods.

That's my goal. Get in and get out."

The sales will continue through the night and into Black Friday for a total of 41 hours of deals.
