Knox County raises money for wreaths on veterans' graves

Knox County campaign brings in $10,000 for wreaths on veterans' graves

KNOX COUNTY (WATE) - An effort to raise money for wreaths on veterans' graves netted over $10,000 by Thursday.

The Knox County mayor's office says contributions topped $5,000 and that amount was matched by a sponsorship from Pilot Flying J.

Mayor Tim Burchett launched the effort Tuesday. The campaign aims to place a wreath on the grave of each of the 6,200 veterans buried at two East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery locations in Knox County.

The mayor's office says more funding is needed to reach that goal. Sponsorships of $15 per wreath are available through the Knox County website.

The county fundraising campaign ends Monday, December 2 and the wreaths will be placed on graves December 14.
