KNOXVILLE (WATE) - With the Christmas season upon us, cyber criminals rub their hands with glee at this time of the year, and Craigslist is at the top of their list to lure in unsuspecting victims.

Linda from South Knoxville writes: "Please let everyone know about Craigslist and the gift card scam."

Gift cards are increasingly used in place of cash for product rebates, and they are a favorite option for people who don't know what to buy others for Christmas. Therefore, there is a flourishing market for buying and selling them, especially on Craigslist.

However, the popular online classified ad website has this warning about a seller who advertised her gift cards for sale.

A buyer offered to exchange his travelers' checks for the gift cards. They met at a designated location, but by the time the seller realized the checks were fake, the cards had been spent.

The lesson is: know who you're dealing with.

Remember, you need to stay one step ahead of this season's cyber-Scrooges, so sometimes you need to be a little bit bold.

Tell the buyer you've been warned about fraud, and you'd like to see the buyer's driver's license. Write down the information and even take a picture of the person.

If they're not on the up and up, they'll cancel the exchange and leave before you can snap their picture.
