Suspect arrested in Seymour dollar store robbery after customers fight back

SEYMOUR (WATE) - A Sevier County man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly robbing a dollar store on Boyd's Creek Road.

Jack C. McCrea, 41, is charged with one count of robbery and two counts of violation of probation.

Sevier County Sheriff Ron Seals says a man entered Dollar General, 2474 Boyd's Creek Road, and approached the cashier when she opened the cash drawer.

The man then suddenly reached across the counter and forcefully grabbed a handful of cash. The suspect then got in a scuffle with a customer who was assaulted.

The suspect ran outside while another customer chased him. The customer broke out the suspect's car window in an attempt to stop him.

The suspect fled in a blue Toyota pickup truck, but witnesses obtained his tag number.

Officers were able to use that information to track down the suspect to an address on Winding Ridge Road where they found McCrea hiding in a storage bin in the basement of the residence.

Detectives are also investigating a similar robbery that happened earlier in the evening at the Zoomers Market.

Officials say the suspect tried the same thing, but was unsuccessful after the clerk resisted and chased the suspect out of the store.

More charges are pending against McCrea pending the conclusion of that investigation.
