MEMPHIS (AP) - Emergency crews are at the ready and residents are stocking up on groceries, buying electricity generators and gassing up their cars in advance of a winter storm forecasters predict will bring freezing rain and ice into northern Mississippi and West Tennessee.

The National Weather Service says winter storm warnings and watches and an ice storm warning are in effect for Friday. Forecasters are anticipating precipitation that could remain frozen on the ground for a day or more.

Tennessee declared a state of emergency for the western and middle parts of the state Thursday. Officials are cautioning residents about potentially hazardous road travel and the possibility that downed trees and power lines could knock out electricity to homes and businesses.
