Maryville voters to take on sales tax increase issue Tuesday

Posted:

MARYVILLE (WATE) - Voters in Maryville will decide Tuesday whether to approve an increase in the local sales tax from 9.25 percent to 9.75 percent.

Polls open at 8 a.m. Tuesday and will remain open until 8 p.m.

The sales tax increase would generate an estimated $2.5 million a year.

Maryville City Manager Greg McClain says half of that would go to the city's schools, while the other half would go to the city.

City council says it would rather raise the sales tax than the property tax.

The same increase would amount to 32 cents on the property tax rate.
