KNOXVILLE (WATE) - There are 17 firefighters starting work Wednesday after graduating from Rural/Metro's Fire Academy Tuesday night.

They all achieved firefighter one certification, which means they can work full-time in more than 40 states.

Firefighter Adam Thomas says the program wasn't easy.

"We spend a lot of time in the classroom, but most of the time is out in the field, getting our hands dirty and working hard," said Thomas.

Nine people also graduated from the National Registry Paramedic Program.
