Several deputies injured when officer accidentally discharges weapon

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knox County deputy has been placed on leave after officials say he accidentally discharged his weapon and injured several other officers Friday night, according to the Knox County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. at the Sally Port of the Detention Facility on Maloneyville Road.

Authorities say intake officer James Blankenship accidentally fired his weapon into the ground, emitting shrapnel into 3 other officers.

Officials say one officer was transported to UT Medical Center for leg wounds and was released soon thereafter. Two others were treated in the Detention Facility Medical Unit for minor injuries.

Blankenship was also transported to UT Medical Center, where he was treated for chest pains.

Blankenship is now on paid administrative leave until the investigation is resolved.
