'Double Your Donation Day' benefits Second Harvest Food Bank

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Second Harvest Food Bank along with members of East Tennessee media, including WATE, held a special donation drive on Monday, December 16.

On "Double Your Donation Day," all donations up to $150,000 made between 7 a.m and 7 p.m. will be matched by anonymous contributors.

Though the final total was not yet available, at the close of the event at 7 p.m., more than $143,000 was raised for Second Harvest.

Last year, the organization not only met their match, but exceeded their goal with donations totaling $162,060, plus additional matching gifts.

Also on Monday, a convoy of trucks called "Haulin' for the Hungry" will head to Second Harvest at 10 a.m. to unload food for the hungry. Joining the convoy will be Bush Brother's, Coca-Cola, US Foods, Pepsi, Sam's Club and Walmart.

Due to poor economic conditions, the demand for food has increased a staggering 25 percent in the last twelve months, according to Elaine Streno, Second Harvest's Executive Director.

"We hope to provide over 750,000 meals to the hungry in our community this winter, but won't be able to meet the need without the help of our community," said Streno.

Second Harvest serves 169,000 people each month in the 18 county area it serves, 39 percent of which are children. The agency provided over 12.3 million meals in 2012, and needs help to restock its shelves after the busy holiday season.

You can still donate to Second Harvest by going online to www.secondharvestetn.org.
