KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A man is in the hospital after a shooting that stemmed from a road rage incident Monday afternoon in East Knox County.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office has charged Rodney Lee Scott, 61, with attempted first degree murder. He is being held on a $1,010,000 bond.

Deputies say Scott almost hit two motorcyclists, Tyler Lakin, 23; and J.R. Trisler, 33; with his Saturn SUV while exiting I-640 onto Washington Pike just before 4 p.m. Monday.

Officers say the two waved their arms at Scott to make sure he saw them. Witnesses say the motorcyclists proceeded to follow Scott. During their pursuit, witnesses say Scott made obscene gestures at Lakin and Trisler before backing into Trisler, knocking him over.

One witness, Joseph Jackson, helped Trisler get the motorcycle up. Jackson witnessed most of the incident.

"It was two motorcycles that pulled up beside me and asked me to call the law and said they'd been hit during a hit and run," Jackson said.

The bikers reportedly followed Scott to his home, where they waited in the street for police to arrive.

Neighbors say Scott began shouting racial slurs at the motorcyclists, went into his garage, and came out with a gun in each hand shooting at the men in the street.

Lakin was shot three times in the back and once in the wrist. Deputies say Scott continued to shoot at Lakin as he lay on the ground.

A Knox County Sheriff's Office detective was the first to arrive on the scene and arrested Scott without incident.

Lakin was taken to UT Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

Detectives believe there are more witnesses to the road rage incident and ask that anyone who saw what happened to contact KCSO at (865) 215-2243.

Prior incidents

Deputies say this is not the first road rage incident involving Rodney Lee Scott. He was charged with assault in March 2002 for stopping a car on Millertown Pike and assaulting one of the passengers.

The victim said she was at the red light on Mall Road South at Millertown Pike when Scott got out of a White Plymouth van and approached her vehicle, yelling and screaming at the woman and her children.

She said Scott was slapping the window of her vehicle. Her minor son then got out of the vehicle and asked Scott what was wrong. Scott then grabbed at the boy's shirt, continued to yell, grabbed the boy's hat and threw it into the vehicle.

The boy had a visible scratch on the side of his face.

Scott then fled the scene. He was given judicial diversion in the case.

Lakin and Trisler also have criminal histories in Knox County. Lakin had been charged in the past with driving under the influence, drug possession and reckless driving. Trisler had been charged in the past with assault, driving on a revoked license and drug possession.
