KNOXVILLE (WATE) - After twelve years on the sidelines and a serious health scare last season, Heath Woods has stepped down as head football coach at Carter High School.
Woods offered his resignation on Tuesday.
The school reluctantly accepted it.
"I spent one hour trying to talk him out of it," athletics director Chad Smith told 6 Sports. "He is leaving on his own account."
Woods missed most of the 2012 season after suffering a major stroke. He returned to the sidelines this season, and the Hornets returned to the playoffs.
"Coach Woods' efforts have significantly improved our program and for that we thank him," said Smith. "We collectively wish Coach Woods, his wife Christy, along with his sons, Clay and Dalton, the best of luck as they move forward."
Smith said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
