KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A special service was held tonight to remember the homeless in Knoxville who died this year.

The annual event began with a candlelight walk at the volunteer ministry center and ended at Saint John's Lutheran Church.

The names of those who have died homeless were read, followed by a tolling of the bell and the lighting of a candle for each person.

One of the people who helped make the service happen explained why it's so important.

"This gives a sense of not just closure but also a sense of continuance. Many times our neighbors who pass away during the year feel forgotten. They feel unattached from the community, so this is an opportunity for the community to be a part of their life."

Members of the homeless community in Knoxville came up with the idea for the service and took part.
