KNOXVILLE (WATE) - You now have just one week left to wrap up all your Christmas shopping, and several retailers are making it easier for you to do so by offering free shipping.

Free Shipping Day started in 2008, but with a shorter shopping season, more stores than ever are participating this year to make up for lost time.

"This is one of those golden days," said University of Tennessee Retail Professor, Ann Fairhurst. "Last year it was the third largest shopping day for online shopping."

This is the last day stores can guarantee your purchases will arrive in time for the holidays at no cost, and for most stores there is no minimum purchase amount.

Target, Belk, Express, J.C. Penney and Amazon are just a few of the more than two thousand stores taking part.

"There have been some surveys done that say when 90 percent of shoppers online, if they know they are getting free shipping, are going to be spending more," said Fairhurst.

It's not just online that retailers are pulling out all the stops. Store hours are also being extended to accommodate last minute shoppers.

Toys-R-Us is leading the pack by staying open 87 straight hours beginning Saturday and ending Christmas Eve.

"As long as the employees are okay with it, I guess it's okay," said a North Knoxville shopper.

"It's a great idea," said another shopper. "Get your shopping done."

Other stores are also extending hours. For example, Target will be staying open till midnight.

The best way to find out if a store is staying open longer is to check their website.

Over the last two years there have been more than a billion dollars in purchases made online on this day.
