Knife found on Oak Ridge school bus, gun found at high school

OAK RIDGE (WATE) - Two incidents involving weapons on school property were reported Wednesday afternoon in Oak Ridge.

Police say they were notified by the Oak Ridge Schools Transportation Department around 2:47 p.m. that they had seized a knife from a student on a school bus earlier that afternoon.

Officers responded to the transportation department, took the knife, and began an aggravated assault investigation.

Initial reports indicate a male high school student allegedly threatened one of two other male students with a folding stainless steel knife during a verbal dispute.

When the bus driver saw what was happening, the driver took the knife and allowed all students to exit at their stops.

Officers say they have identified the suspect and victim or victims and are working to identify other witnesses.

Meanwhile, while that incident was being investigated, ORPD School Resource Officer SHerrill Selby was sent to Oak Ridge High School about a 17-year-old male student who was creating a disturbance in a disciplinary meeting with school staff.

Officer Selby learned the student may be armed or have a weapon in his car. Selby located the student, detained him for investigation, and summoned additional officers who were on scene in minutes.

The student's car was searched and a stolen, loaded .357 magnum revolver was found and seized, along with marijuana packaged for resale and suspected drug proceeds in excess of $950.

The student was arrested and taken to Juvenile Court in Clinton.

The investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
