Dad delivers daughter in gas station parking lot

When his significant other went into labor en route to the hospital last month, a Nashville father sprung into action and delivered his daughter in a gas station's parking lot.

"I woke up that morning with discomfort, but not what I thought was labor," mother Shannon Hodge recalled.

Erring on the side of caution Hodge and expectant father Neil Huffines decided to go to the hospital to get checked out.

However, as rush hour traffic continued to build, Hodge's discomfort took a turn.

"Very quickly things changed once we got on our commute," Hodge said, continuing, "It went from, 'I'm not sure if I'm in labor' to 'We don't know if we're going to make it to the hospital.'"

The couple quickly called 911, but both mother and father knew their daughter would arrive before an ambulance.

Eight minutes after pulling off the interstate into a Shelby Avenue Tiger Mart parking lot the couple's daughter, Lillian was born.

The store's surveillance video captured her birth.

"Hero daddy just delivered her and cleared her airway and then she started to cry and he tied her cord off with his shoe lace and swaddled her in my pants and put her on my chest," Hodge said.

Huffines added, "It's just one of those things where you have to put your game face on and do what you have to do. The funny thing is since the whole time she was pregnant, I wanted to be the one to get down there and deliver the baby."

At just three weeks old, Lillian now has a story of a lifetime to tell when she gets older.
