KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Students at a Knox County elementary school hit the gym floor Thursday to help one of their own who is suffering from arthritis.

An estimated 6,000 children in Tennessee are affected by arthritis. That's more than juvenile diabetes.

Ritta Elementary School held their annual "Jingle Bell Run and Walk" Thursday morning to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation. The theme was "Jingle in Your Jammies."

It's a very special cause for the school because Olivia Ward, a fourth grader at Ritta, struggles with arthritis on a daily basis. Olivia's mom is also the bookkeeper there.

"It's pretty tough because I'm stiff in the morning, and I usually can't walk that far," said Olivia.

"It is a day to day thing. You know, I'm dressing her in the mornings. We're having to carry her up the stairs. It was a real struggle for her and heartbreaking for a parent to watch her hurting so badly and not be able to fix it.," said Olivia's mom Khristanne Ward.

The event raised just over $2,000 for the Arthritis Foundation.
