TOWNSEND (WATE) - An elderly man was killed in a car accident Thursday afternoon in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Park officials say Frank T. Lohmann, 83, was traveling westbound on Little River Road about three miles east of Townsend Wye when his 2006 Toyota Avalon collided with a 2001 Ford F-250 truck driven by Brett Adams, 34.

Lohmann's vehicle ran off the road, landing upside down in the river.

Bystanders who saw the crash were able to pull Lohmann from the vehicle and up the 30-foot embankment to the roadway. He was declared dead on scene by emergency personnel.

Adams was not injured. He has been charged with unsafe operation of a motor vehicle and no proof of financial responsibility.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
