KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Police say one person was killed as a result of a wrong-way crash early Saturday morning.

The Knoxville Police Department says witnesses informed them that a Jeep entered onto Interstate 40 East near Alcoa Highway just before 3 a.m. going the wrong direction.

The driver of the Jeep has been identified as 27-year-old Bryan Winfree of Knoxville. Police say the Jeep smashed head-on into a semi-truck.

Officials say the semi-truck driver, Dave Sites Jr. of Rock Cave, West Virginia, was taken to UT Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the jeep was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic had been slowed in that area for several hours following the crash.
