KNOXVILLE (WATE) - For the first Christmas in three years, South Knoxville business owners say sales are up. This thanks to the Henley Street Bridge being re-opened ahead of schedule.

Some customers say if the bridge was still closed, they wouldn't make the trip.

The owner of Emery's 5 & 10, Ron Emery, says the holidays are always a busy time of year at his store.

"Some people drive up from Atlanta during December to shop here," Emery said.

This year, he says more people than ever are visiting his store.

"We are up from last Christmas. What's tough on South Knoxville during the last five years, or the last three, is the economy was down plus the bridge closing. I think things are improving all around so we are excited the bridge is open," Emery said.

We spoke with a customer at Emery 5 & 10. Lisa Nicely made the trip from East Knoxville.

"We're out here getting last minute stocking stuffers," Nicely said.

She says the bridge being back open makes it easier to shop in this part of town.

"We were on the other side of town last week and had that bridge not been open I wouldn't have come over this way, I just wouldn't have done it," Nicely said.

Down the street from Emery's is the Disc Exchange. President Allan Miller says when the Henley Street Bridge closed three years ago, sales dropped about 30 percent. Now, he says things are slowly getting back to normal.

"It certainly is helping with the holiday shopping, although it's a slow help because right now I think a lot of people are still not in the habit of coming over here," Miller said.

There are still some detour signs near the bridge, but once these are taken down, Miller says he expects sales to continue rising.
