NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A 24-year-old mother was arrested Monday night for leaving her small child alone in her pickup truck in sub-freezing weather.

A passerby spotted the child in the parking lot of the Walmart on Dickerson Pike and flagged down a police officer.

The child was in the back seat and the truck's engine was not running.  It was 30 degrees outside the at the time.  The girl was not wearing a coat, was cold to the touch and had a dirty diaper.

Officers took the girl into the store to get warm after they were able to get her to open the truck's door.

It was an hour and 15 minutes before the girl's mother, Mercedes Sevier, returned to the vehicle.

She at first told officers the truck wasn't hers but later admitted it was when she realized officers had already attended to her daughter.

Holiday shoppers at the Madison strip mall were shocked to learned of the mother's arrest.

"God gives them to us to take care of them and when we don't it's just really sad," said shopper Carla Lillard.

Sevier was arrested and charged with aggravated child endangerment.  She was booked into the Metro jail on $10,000 bond.
