MARYVILLE (WATE) – Investigators in Blount County are looking for a man who held up a convenience store on Morganton Road.

The owner of Ian's Market believes the criminal who targeted his store was watching the business and waited for all the customers to leave before he came in.

Surveillance video shows a man, wearing a hooded jacket, demanding that the convenience store owner open the cash register. The man then pockets the cash.

"Money, money, money," said owner Rameshbhai Patel, telling us how the robber was mainly yelling for cash.

The robber also pointed a gun at Patel while forcing him to bag several boxes of cigarettes. The robber also took several scratch-off lottery tickets. Patel says he just silently followed orders.

"I was very scared, it was scary," he explained. "In five minutes, it was all over," Patel said, talking about how quickly it ended.

It was five minutes that still has him shaken up.

The store is in a quiet section of Blount County. Residents say they are shaken up by the Christmas Eve robbery.

"When it hits close to home, it makes you nervous. You pay a little more attention. You pay attention to who's driving by," explained Charles Smith, a regular customer.

The man eventually left the store in a small dark vehicle. The suspect is described 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 with a stocky build. He was wearing a black and gray striped hooded jacket, black pants, tennis shoes and wore a black mask that covered his whole face.

If you have any information about the robbery, you are urged to call the Blount County Sheriff's Office at (865) 273-5200.
