KNOXVILLE (WATE) - MEDIC Regional Blood Center is making one last push to bolster its already low blood supplies by the end of the year.

The holiday season is a traditionally slow time for donations, but this year supplies are not only low. Some blood types are at critical levels.

"This year with the flu and injuries and things like that it's extremely low right now," said Director of Business Development Mike Prowell.

The B-Negative supply has been hit hard by the holiday season, but the lowest supply is O-Negative.

"Right now we have a critical need for O-Negative type blood," said Prowell. "We have three units of O-Negative blood on our shelves for 28 hospitals in 22 counties."

Normally, the center likes to keep a supply of 150 units on its shelves.

To help get there, MEDIC is offering incentives to all donors on Monday, December 30 that would normally be offered at select locations only.

"We are giving away a pair of Regal Cinema movie tickets, a Texas Roadhouse coupon for an appetizer plus a T-shirt," said Prowell.

Medic is reaching out to first-time donors today to help reach a goal of 500 donations. They want people to know it is an easy and painless process that can save up to two lives per donation.

"For first time donors be sure to eat well before you donate and drink plenty of fluids," said Prowell. "It's an easy process. It takes about 15 minutes for the interview and mini physical and the actual donation takes about five to ten minutes."
