ATHENS (WATE) - A McMinn County man was arrested for allegedly kicking a cat like a football on Christmas Eve, killing it.
A report from the Athens Police Department indicates Dejion Marquel Roberson, 20, is charged with cruelty to animals. He was also wanted in Marion County, Tenn. for violation of probation.
Police say they responded on Dec. 24 to a home on Moore Street in Athens for a report of a neighbor kicking a cat.
When they arrived two witnesses said a man they only knew by the name "D.J." was walking in a yard and kicked a cat he was carrying by the neck as if it were a football or soccer ball.
One witness said she checked on the cat a short time later, finding it had died.
She said she exchanged words with another man who said the cat had run inside his house and pounced on a small child.
After speaking with witnesses, it was determined the suspect was not defending the child and the cat was a distance away from the home when he killed it.
The witnesses said "D.J." left in an older mode Dodge van.
On Dec. 26, police determined the suspect was Roberson. The witnesses were able to identify him from a photo lineup. He was arrested and charged on Dec. 29.
Police do not know to whom the cat belonged, if anyone.
