KNOXVILLE (WATE) – With temperatures bottoming out in the days ahead, the extreme cold air and how to deal with it at home are on the minds of many homeowners.

At the Home Depot in East Knoxville, business in their plumbing department tripled today. That's because so many people had their pipes freeze.

6 News took a look at how to keep that from happening, as well as other inexpensive purchases you should be thinking about right now.

"I'm a warm weather guy and I like to stay in the house when it's cold," said Tom Gilliland, one of many people shopping for cold weather appliances at the store.

"We bought a heater, and we bought warm weather stripping to keep the draft out," Gilliland added, showing us his purchases.

We asked expert Bobby Wolfenbarger at the store to show us some of the inexpensive purchases shoppers should be thinking about right now.

He suggested outdoor faucet covers that run $2 to $3.

"You can hook it around the faucet, then tighten it, and it stays right there," he explained.

They sell an electric heated cable for your pipes that runs $30. A $4 can of insulating spray can take care of the gaps and cracks in your home.

From roughly $2-$13 he showed us several options to keep the draft out of your doors and windows.

Many at the store hope the cold air leaves just as quickly and suddenly as it came in.

"I want 70 degree weather from now until Spring," Gilliland said.

Some other tips for your home include running your faucets every 30 minutes.  You can also flush your commodes every 30 minutes to keep your pipes from freezing.

Lastly, don't forget to bring your pets inside.
