NORRIS (WATE) - The American Red Cross and Norris First Baptist Church helped set up a shelter for students from Norris Academy after water pipes burst, forcing them to evacuate on Tuesday.

Norris Academy is a residential treatment facility that serves autistic children.

Donna Kirk from Norris Academy say two pipes froze and burst around 1 p.m., causing a large amount of damage to the cafeteria area.

"An alarm went off in the front of the building telling us something was wrong. Water was pouring out the front of the building," said Kirk.

She says the evacuation was no easy task.

"For us it's safety, keeping the kids safe. The cold is also very dangerous, not just a burst pipe. So we just have to get through it," said Kirk.

Around 30 children are expected to spend the night at Norris First Baptist Church and the Red Cross has provided cots, blankets and comfort kits with toothbrushes, toothpaste and washcloths. Restaurants have also donated food for them to eat.

Kirk said, while she is exhausted, she is very thankful for the help and community support. She says they hope to have the children back at school Wednesday.
