KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Tuesday marked seven years since the brutal murder of young Knoxville couple Channon Christian and Chris Newsom.

They were tortured, raped and killed in January 2007. Four people were found guilty in their deaths. Their convictions were overturned when the presiding judge, Richard Baumgartner, admitted to abusing prescription painkillers. They were later convicted again under another judge.

After years of attending trials and then the retrials of their children's cases, the Christians and the Newsoms are now working on passing new laws.

They hope new legislation, named after Channon and Chris, will better protect victims during trials and to require drug testing for judges.

"Things like that. It may not mean much to some people, but to us, criminal trials are done a daily basis. And every time one of those laws is enforced or talked about in a courtroom, their names are going to be talked about. They're never going to be forgotten," said Gary Christian.
