RICHMOND (WRIC) - You could be paying a penalty for going below the speed limit if a new bill passes.
One lawmaker is proposing making it illegal to drive in the left lane going less than the posted speed limit. HB51 is aimed at getting slower drivers in other lanes.
"Absolutely good idea," says Rosie Workman. "If they're going to go slow they need to get in the slow lane.
"The left lane should be used to allow people to pass you, as long as they're running the speed limit, and they shouldn't be blocking traffic by blocking up two or three lanes," says Wylie Cobb.
Some drivers who support the measure also say slow drivers in the fast lane are a safety hazard and can cause accidents
"People going slow in that lane hold up traffic all the time," says Jared Hayes. "I've seen accidents caused by it. It's definitely a good idea to force people to move over. You have a lot of road rage incidents I think because of that."
The bill now heads to the transportation committee where lawmakers will decide if the measure will move forward.
