Roll Up Your Sleeve and give blood

Posted:

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - WATE and STAR 102.1 are teaming up again during the week of January 13-17 to host "Roll Up Your Sleeve Week."

MEDIC is on emergency appeal for certain blood types due to the extremely cold temperatures.

Some blood drives were canceled while others had few to no donors.

MEDIC is currently in need of all blood types, O Negative and B Negative are at critical levels. O Negative is the universal blood type most often used during emergency situations when blood type is not known.

Only 1.5 percent of the population has B Negative blood and supplies have been low for some time.

MEDIC is the sole provider of blood for 22 counties and 28 area hospitals and depends on volunteer donors to meet the need of area hospital patients.

Blood drive locations are all over the WATE 6 viewing area, as well as Medic's two donor centers: 1601 Ailor Avenue, Knoxville, and 11000 Kingston Pike, Farragut.

All donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more (16 year olds weighing 120 pounds or more can donate but must have parental consent) and all donors must have positive identification.

Questions regarding eligibility can be directed to MEDIC at (865) 524-3074 or www.medicblood.org.
