Brief standoff ensues between Campbell County deputies and shooting suspect


LAFOLLETTE (WATE) - Campbell County deputies engaged in a short standoff with an elderly man on Saturday evening, after he allegedly shot someone.

Officials say that 80-year-old Dendin Miller shot 51-year-old Merle Ivey at around 6 p.m. at a home on Back Valley Road in LaFollette.

Ivey was flown to UT Medical Center by Lifestar. Deputies say he underwent surgery and is now listed as being in critical condition.

Campbell County officials told 6 News that a standoff ensued following the shooting between deputies and Miller.

Authorities say Miller surrendered his weapon and gave himself up to deputies around 30 minutes after the incident began.

Miller has since been questioned and released.

The investigation is ongoing.
