KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A balloon release was held Monday for Brittany Eldridge, the pregnant Knoxville woman who was murdered just over two years ago.

Eldridge and her unborn son Zeke were killed on December 13, 2011. Her body was found inside her Knoxville apartment. Eldridge was eight months pregnant at the time of her death.

Family and friends of the victims gathered near their grave Monday afternoon to celebrate what would have been Brittany's 28th birthday.

Balloons with birthday messages on them were released in her honor.

Brittany's mother Robin Owens said the event was bittersweet.

"She's in heaven looking down on us, not only as an angel but seeing what we're doing in her memory. That we're celebrating her birthday even though she's not here, it's still a happy occasion and it would be for her if she were here with us," Owens said.

Eldridge's family started the Brittany and Zeke foundation after her death as way of keeping her memory alive and doing good in the community.

No arrests have been made in the case.
