Birmingham Zoo announces baby giraffe's name

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL - A Facebook contest to name a new baby giraffe at the Birmingham Zoo is over. The 12-day-old male, reticulated giraffe will be called "Griffin."

The zoo's giraffe-naming contest ran for a week beginning Jan. 6. People "following" the Birmingham Zoo on Facebook were able to choose their favorite name out of three names: Griffin, Kwame or Patton, selected by zookeepers. Out of 2,800 votes received, one voter received a one-year Family Membership package to the Birmingham Zoo and a behind-the-scenes tour of the giraffe exhibit.

Griffin was born at 12:12 AM on Jan. 1 at the Birmingham Zoo.   Since his birth, the baby giraffe has grown three inches and now stands at 6 feet, 5 inches tall. The Birmingham Zoo now has five giraffes in its collection.

"Griffin has been doing great. He has been outside during the warmer days of this month, is continuing to nurse and is thriving in his environment. His energy level remains high, and he is constantly on the go, running and playing. Birmingham Zoo staff continues to monitor his progress,"  Zookeeper Amanda Hawkins said.

Guests may see Griffin on the Savannah Yard.
