CROSSVILLE (WATE) - After last week's deep freeze, Cumberland County is gearing up for another round of snow.

Several hundred tons of salt sits ready to be used in Crossville.

Joe Miller runs Crossville's Street Department. He estimates the city has spent about $25,000 on salt just this month.

"Our salt bin is full. We can't put any more in it," Miller said. "We understand that people do still have to travel regardless of the weather. So we try to make it as painless as possible."

At Cumberland County's Highway Department, Superintendent Scott Blaylock says they put their spreaders and plows back on the trucks today, and they have about $3,000 of salt ready to go.

"After this last system came through, we had 23 tons of salt hauled in,"Blaylock said.

Blaylock says the county covers more than 1,000 miles of roads with a budget of about $20,000.

"A county this size, there's no way to just salt the roads," Blaylock said. "So we use a compound mixture which is just sand, salt and the chips, it helps with traction."

Both the city and county crews will start treating the roads once the snow hits. No word yet on whether schools here will close tomorrow, but mom Carolyn Troxel says she hopes they will.

"I think they should call it off even if it's just a little bit bad. I mean we might not like it because they have to stay home, but it's better that they're safe at home."

The 6 Storm Team is calling for up to an inch of snow in Cumberland County.
