OLIVER SPRINGS (WATE) - An Anderson County man was arrested late Wednesday morning after a standoff at a home in Oliver Springs.

The standoff started around 3 a.m. at a home on Batley Road.

Sheriff Paul White says homeowner Gregory Denton, 50, got into an argument with Benjamin Emory, 47, and Angela Badgett, 45, a couple who was renting the upstairs of the two-story home. The couple told deputies Denton had been drinking.

Emory and Badgett say the argument escalated and Denton pulled a gun on them.Badgett said she was able to get away by making up a story about needing to go to the car to get cigarettes. She instead ran to a neighbor as Denton fired shots at her.

Emory was also able to later get away, go to a neighbors house, and call authorities. Sheriff White says Denton fired shots at him as well.

Emory suffered minor injuries during the altercation. Neither he nor Badgett were hit by gunshots.

Officers with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office and the Oak Ridge Police Department then entered into a standoff with Denton. Denton failed to respond to officers despite numerous attempts.

Denton reportedly had several weapons in the home including long guns.

After about eight hours, the tactical team was preparing to deploy tear gas when Denton surrendered.

Officials then moved in and took him into custody without incident around 11:20 a.m.

Sheriff White says Denton had pending charges in Knox and Anderson County from previous incidents.

He is currently in the Anderson County jail without bond on aggravated assault charges.
