KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Old Knoxville Courthouse was evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to a gas leak outside the building.

Officials on scene say the call came in around 3:35 p.m. of a gas leak on a line outside the courthouse located at 300 Main Street. Gas began seeping inside.

Most of the courthouse workers had already gone home for the day, but 35 to 40 people were evacuated from the building.

The doors to the courthouse were opened and the gas dissipated from the building.

Knoxville Utilities Board officials say they have identified and isolated the leak, but the cause has not been determined.

KUB says the courthouse is safe, but they were waiting for gas levels to return to normal.

There is currently no timeline for repairs to the gas line.
