KNOXVILLE (WATE) - New York is one of the more popular destinations for travelers coming from McGhee Tyson Airport, leading to the need for more routes. American Airlines will be the second airline to offer flights to LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

Delta Airlines has been the only other option up until now, leaving limited choices for folks going back and forth to New York.

Jim and Pat Cavanaugh live outside of Crossville.

"All of our family is in the northeast," said Jim Cavanaugh.

Today they were waiting for their son to arrive on a flight from Syracuse. They say having more options into New York means their family may start flying into Knoxville more than Nashville.

"This is shorter for us and easier," said Jim Cavanaugh. "It's always convenient for a major airport to have as many options as possible, both airlines and destinations."

An airport spokesperson said on Wednesday travelers will get a lot of use out of these additional flights.

"This is a great benefit for our community because it's a popular destination for us, especially this time of year and something that we believe will be extremely successful in our community."

More travelers means more money for taxi drivers like Stoney Ogle.

"It means more business. We make more money that way with more flights," Ogle said.

Stoney has been picking up travelers in his cab for three years now, and he says many of them are coming from New York and Washington D.C.

"It does seem to be quite often," Ogle said. "We all wish there were more flights coming in and out of Knoxville."
