Man stabbed to death in Tellico Plains, suspect in custody

TELLICO PLAINS (WATE) - One man is dead and another is in custody following a stabbing in Monroe County Saturday evening.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says deputies were dispatched to reports of a stabbing at a location near Lick Creek Road and Gamble Gap Road in Tellico Plains just before 6 p.m. when they found the victim.

Deputies say 45-year-old Claude Torbett was found stabbed. Deputies say they provided medical aid until EMS arrived.

Torbett was taken to the Sweetwater Hospital emergency room via ambulance, but authorities say they were unable to revive him.

Deputies say they were able to determine the crime scene took place at a home on the 400 block of Gamble Gap Road.

Deputies arrested 48-year-old William "Fud" Winkler Jr. a short time later.

Officials say Winkler knew the victim prior to the stabbing.

Winkler has been charged with second degree murder. He is currently being housed at the Monroe County Jail.

His bond has not yet been set.
