Lookout Mountain installing license plate cameras

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (AP) - Residents of Lookout Mountain are installing traffic cameras to record the license plate numbers of vehicles that travel into the upscale residential community.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports the cameras are expected to be operational by next month.

The move comes after a rash of burglaries over the summer targeting homes on Lookout Mountain. More than 200 residents pooled contributions together to purchase and install the $88,000 system.

Although civil libertarians have expressed concerns about license plate readers in other areas, a local official said there's no reason to worry.

Police Chief Randy Belden of the Tennessee side compared the cameras to those installed by malls and other retailers.

He said the data captured won't be used unless there's a crime to follow up on.
