KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Tomato Head restaurant in Downtown Knoxville is undergoing a big renovation and expansion this week.

The eatery is closed for the next few days as construction crews complete the first part of the upgrades.

They're making improvements the owners say have been needed for several years and are coming as a result of the recent surge in popularity in Market Square.

"Quicker, more comfortable service is our goal," said Tomato Head co-owner Scott Partin.

They're not only renovating their existing space, but are actually expanding into the area next door.

"It's a very updated look. Just a really beautiful restaurant. It'll look different but hopefully feel the same," said Partin.

The update will double the restaurant's current size, making the kitchen much larger and providing room for many more tables for diners.

"A lot more room to move around. Much quieter space. Much more comfortable space. We'll add booth seating in the long term," said Partin.

The addition they're most excited to offer to customers is a new full size bar.

"Having a bar will make people much more comfortable while they wait. It'll help us to branch out our focus on craft beers so we move from 6 taps to 20 taps. All regional breweries that are within one state of Tennessee," said Partin.

They've been planning this expansion for more than a year and say the growing popularity of Market Square has been begging for this redo.

"It's great to see Market Square as a focal point for downtown and for people all over Knoxville," said Partin.

It's not just employees who are pumped.

"Everyone's really, really happy. All the staff are excited," said Partin.

Frequent customers of the place known for its pizzas are too.

"It'll be nice to have a little more space to spread out and it'll be interesting to see the concept they do with the bar," said Alex Papandrew of Knoxville.

Construction is going as planned at this point. The owners say the restaurant will open back up on Thursday, January 23. The upgrades will be complete over the next six weeks.

Tomato Head has owned the space next to their restaurant for nearly four years, but have been leasing it out to other tenants during that time.

It's been vacant for about a year.
