A cafe unlike any other in our community is thriving a few months after its opening.

The One Acre Cafe allows people to pay for their meal through donations, paying it forward, or by volunteering in the restaurant.

"We want to make sure that they have a meal, that their bellies are filled, but we also we want to provide a place from a spiritual standpoint they're strengthened, hope is offered to them, and they just find a place sort of like a safe haven. You walk in to this place and you know something special is going on here," Bryan Orchard, volunteer coordinator said.

It opened its doors for the first time in November and now owners say they're averaging about 100 people eating in the cafe per day.

"As far as expectations there were really none in terms of numbers, when you think about things like that the expectation was that we want to make sure this cafe is changing the lives of people in this community that need it," Orchard said.

"It's really a community cafe where you see everything from rich to poor," volunteer Ed Gerace said.

People from all around the community have pitched in to make the cafe possible.

Some students from around the area gave up their day off school Monday to help out at the cafe.

The chef formerly a cook for Gourmet.

When they have extra food, they put big meals together and send them to local charities and shelters.

"I think it's a little bit more than the food at this point, we have folks that are coming back, and that will just directly tell us there's something special about here, about being here," Orchard said.

One Acre Cafe is located at 603 West Walnut Street.

It's open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
