NASHVILLE (AP) - A Nashville man has been hurt trying to save his dog while the animal was being stabbed.

Police say Jacob Campbell, 24, heard his pit bull yelping in the yard just after midnight on Tuesday and discovered an intruder stabbing the animal. Authorities say Campbell tackled the suspect and was stabbed in the left shoulder while trying to save his dog.

Nashville Police spokeswoman Kris Mumford said police are still searching for the suspect, who fled on foot. Mumford said the dog was taken to an emergency vet and will make a full recovery, and the owner was treated at a local hospital and released.

Police are still trying to determine why the dog was stabbed. Mumford said the dog may have surprised the suspect.
