GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) - A Greene County teenager accused of stabbing another student in a school cafeteria broke down in court Thursday, when he found out he would be charged as an adult.

Seventeen year old Jacob Mitchell is charged with attempted first degree murder. He is accused of attacking a fellow South Greene High School student three times in the back last September.

During Tuesday’s transfer hearing, witnesses said the two teens were fighting over a girl. Surveillance video from the high school cafeteria showed a friend jumped on Mitchell’s back to stop the attack.

After hearing from 14 witnesses, the judge took a day to deliberate his decision. The judge ruled Thursday morning to move Mitchell to adult criminal court.

He called it a troubling case and said it was the toughest decision he’s made in his seven and a half years. He said he understands the teen had a rough upbringing with little guidance, going so far as to say he felt the teen had never been taught to make good decisions. The judge also said he fully believes Mitchell is sorry for the attack.

But he said he had to transfer him because evidence shows it was an aggressive and premeditated act. The judge also cited past treatment efforts and a history of drug use as reasons for his decision.

Mitchell’s bond has been set at $80,000. If he posts bond, he is not allowed to set foot on the grounds of any school anywhere, not just Greene County.  He’s being held at the Greene County Jail, isolated from other inmates. Mitchell faces between 15 and 25 years behind bars.

Mitchell is expected to appear in criminal court for an arraignment on March 31.
