SYKESVILLE, Md. (WATE) - A former aide to U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander who was charged last month with possessing and distributing child pornography was found dead in his home Thursday of a suspected suicide.

In a release from the Carroll County, Md. Sheriff's Office, deputies say family members found Jesse Ryan Loskarn, 35, unresponsive in his basement around noon Thursday. He had been living with his parents under court order since December.

The preliminary investigation indicates Loskarn may have taken his own life. His body has been taken to the Maryland State Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.

Loskarn was Alexander's chief of staff until December 11 when U.S. Postal Inspection Service arrested him. He was formally charged the next day.

Loskarn was released to his parents and put under electronic monitoring.

Sen. Alexander immediately placed Loskarn on administrative leave without pay and named David Cleary as his new chief of staff.

Investigators said Loskarn purchased and distributed child pornography over the Internet.

Sen. Alexander released this statement Friday: "For everyone involved, this is a sad and tragic story from beginning to end."

The Associated Press reports federal prosecutor Mi Yung Park warned more than a month ago that Loskarn might be at risk of harming himself over child pornography charges.

The warning came on Dec. 16 during a detention hearing in Washington.

Park argued that Loskarn should be detained because he had said after his arrest five days earlier that his life was over.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
