347 arrested by KCSO's shoplifting task force

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Knox County Sheriff's Office says its Safe Holidays Task Force was a success, resulting in 347 arrests between November 25 and December 27.

KCSO says the task force recovered more than $60,000 in stolen property. Shoplifters were caught with merchandise worth as little as $1.60 to as much as $15,000.

The majority of the arrests were for shoplifting, but the task force also served outstanding warrants and arrested one man for being a fugitive from justice out of Florida.

They also wrote over 100 traffic citations.

The sheriff's office says the presence of officers at major shopping centers also helped deter crimes such as car burglaries and purse snatchings.

The first year of the task force, 267 people were arrested and last year, 328 arrested. Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones said the task force will be out again next year during the holiday season.
